Shipwreck: Robinson Crusoe as survivor Today we scanned a long, difficult text. It was taken from the diary of Robinson Crusoe, and it was about his adventures (it was really an excerpt (=extract) from Daniel Defoe's novel). We understood that Robinson is scared, alone, senseless and that he is lost. How did he become a castaway? Here are some ideas we had about the text: He thinks all his friends drowned. He doesn't have food, water or weapons. he has to climb on a cliff to be safe on the island. He is underwater, his boat has wrecked. He is on his boat. He is a Christian, he prays to God to save him. Warm Up a werewolf full moon shamanism all over the world a shapeshifter homework: right or wrong? Are the points in the lesson correct or not ? justify by quoting from the text please!

Watching Movies Inspired by Robinson Crusoe 1 At first, we imagined what movies we could watch.  We said: we're likely to watch Cast Away with Tom Hanks. we're likely to see the emotions of the actor. we're unlikely to study The Martian, even if the story is inspired by Robinson Crusoe. Then, we watched an old black and white trailer for King Kong (1933).  There were explorers on a tropical island. They wanted to film a savage tribe during a ceremony. It was mysterious ; in the end, the tribe kidnapped a Western woman. They were likely to sacrifice her, to give her to King Kong. 4th Theory and Early Castaways Today we talked about Henry Pitman, a surgeon who survived a shipwreck in the Caribbeans. His story was told by J. Taylor, and probably inspired Daniel Defoe. Then, we started thinking about early incarnations of a castaway, like Ulysses in Homer's Odyssey or Sinbad the sailor in the Arabian Nights . These heroes became universal, because humanity has always been fascinated by these themes (unknown lands, exploration, exile, survival, symbolic death and return).   The Different Inspirations For Robinson Crusoe Today we studied the three first examples of the document.  First, we learnt about Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. Because he told his captain the ship was in a bad condition, we was punished. He was dropped ( marooned , or, abandoned ) on a desert island. He was saved five years later and returned a hero. Then, we learnt about Ibn Tufail's book, the Hayy Ibn Yaqdhan ( the Self Learnt Philosopher ). This novel is about a child on a desert island, who thinks about his situation, and his loneliness. Finally, we learnt about Robert Knox, who was sailor too, and survived a shipwreck ( when the ship is destroyed ). He became a slave on an island near Sri Lanka, and could escape only after 20 years.  Warm Up Achilles Trojan / Troy demigod Homer was a blind bard Zeus Aphrodite Homework: read the last theory (about Henry Pitman), and write a one sentence summary about it.

The Real People Behind Robinson Crusoe At first, we thought (imagined) this text was about 4 different versions of RC, or 4 real people who were inspired by the book. But it was not the case ( ce n'était pas le cas ): The real point of the text is : RC was inspired by real people. why? because in the text, ... it is said "[these people and that] text [were] an important influence on Defoe's novel." So Daniel Defoe took these four stories, mixed them all together and created his novel, Robinson Crusoe . A castaway   -> un naufragé remote          -> lointain a travelogue -> un journal de voyage a diary          -> un journal (intime) a novel         -> un roman   Warm Up To choose, chose, chosen to boycott

Robinson Crusoe's Frontispiece He could be considered as a myth because we don't know if it's real. "written by himself" but it's a lie, Daniel Defoe wrote it. But he pretended it was an autobiography.  He could be considered as a hero because everybody thinks he's an explorer / in unknown lands.

M&H 2 : Definitions

Today we thought about what a myth and a hero were. We defined these two words, using etymology. A HERO is a demigod for the Greeks ( ἥρως heros), someone who represents his own time.  A MYTH is a lie for the Greeks ( μῦθος, muthos ), something that doesn't exist, a creation of the mind. We took the example of Marylin Monroe. She didn't exist. Norma Jean Baker did (she had brown hair, a different nose, and was quite depressed). She was her own creation. Nowadays, we can still picture her in our minds. Moreover, she could be considered as a hero, because she represented her times pretty well (glamour, turning stars into heroes, untimely and dramatic death). Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (beginning of the end) Today we started working on a new notion by studying a picture. It was a black and white drawing, with mountains in the background and sea in the foreground. On a beach, there were palm trees everywhere. It looked like a secret island with no civilization. Then we noticed a man with a beard and a hat. He had weapons (a rifle and a spear). We could also see he had his foot on a black man's head, lying on the ground. There were two dead bodies in the distance.  Finally, we understood this was a drawing taken from the first edition of Robinson Crusoe . a drawing              -> a sketch, un dessin in the background / in the foreground a palm tree            -> a tree that grows on tropical islands. a beard                ...

Drawing A Parallel between Rocky IV and the Evil Empire Speech Today we kept on (keep on= continuer ) working on the training montage in Rocky IV. We had said that  Rocky's training has a meaning : he trains in Nature, and cuts trees to build a fire. He helps people too. He reconnects with his American roots : he becomes Great Again (R. Reagan's slogan). We also had said  Drago becomes a machine during his training. He is described as a dehumanized machine, cold and devoid of emotions ( dénué d'émotions ).  We also noticed that Apollo could be the  symbol for a weak, declining America. The Training Montage is an illustration of the Evil Empire Speech: the USSR is a "totalitarian darkness," and "quiet with white collars" organize and supervise the training. On the other hand, Rocky must train in Nature and help people and become strong again, because he is the quintessential American hero. Warm Up created / WW2 symbol of the USA war period Nazis...

Training Montage Today we watched two passages from Rocky IV. In the introduction, the boxing gloves move very slowly, and are made of metal, and when they clash, they explode. They look like nuclear warheads ( ogives nucléaires ) about to be launched ( qui vont être lancées ). It echoes ( cela fait écho à ) Reagan's speech: Americans should be ready for war, and the Nuclear Race must be resumed ( doit être reprise ). Then we watched the famous training montage. Here's a table with our impressions: ROCKY/USA                                                                                DRAGO/USSR Training in Nature                                                ...

Seats & Forms Of Power 4

Reading the Speech Today we tried and read the speech more carefully. We discovered that Reagan says the Russian people is unhappy under Communism, and that maybe one day, they will be friendly with Americans. But then (now in the past), the USSR is still evil. He also says that evil is created in nice offices by "quiet men in white collars" ( en col blanc ). He also declares that these quiet men are the Soviets, and that they are dangerous for the USA, because they pretend (to pretend= faire semblant ) they want peace, but they really want the destruction of America. Finally, he wants Americans to prepare for war, to show some courage, and to accept nuclear race. Evil Empire Speech Today we studied a famous speech by R.Reagan, delivered in 1981. The first paragraph is about a "young father" working in Hollywood, who said in a gathering that he preferred to see his daughters die than becoming Communists. Hollywood can be seen as a form of power: it helps spread ( propager ) American ideas and ideals and policies. Reagan, from Actor to President of the USA Today we had an oral comprehension activity. Here's what we learnt. Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became the President of the USA. He was elected twice, in 1980 and 1984. Before that, he had been the governor of California, in 1967. He was a Republican. During his two terms ( mandats ), he was a very popular president, with an economic boom. In 1988, he had a 68% approval rating ( côte de popularité ). In 1981, there was an assassination attempt ( tentative d'assassinat ) against him. He was also the oldest elected president before Donald Trump. homework Correction USA / USSR 1945 / 1989 (Fall of the Berlin Wall) -1990 (collapse of the USSR) CO mmunism threatened (menaced) devil-incarnate nuclear tension Homework for next time : try and find the meaning of the words from the sheet (la fiche)

Seats & Forms Of Power 1

Rocky, A Symbol Of Power Today we studied a picture. We could see parts of the American flag, hidden behind blue squares. At first glance ( au premier regard ), we thought it was about Donald Trump because he's the President of the USA. Then we noticed two men holding the flag ; there was a ring in the background. Eventually, we understood it was the poster of a movie called Rocky IV, with Sylvester Stallone. We wondered why it was connected with the notion "Seats & Forms of Power." In Rocky IV, Rocky is the symbol of the American power, and the movie showed the Americans in a good light.  the US flag is called Stars and Stripes. To hide, hid, hidden - cacher to notice - remarquer in the background - à l'arrière plan in the foreground - au premier plan we wondered why - on s'est demandé pourquoi
