Seats & Forms of Power 5

Training Montage Today we watched two passages from Rocky IV. In the introduction, the boxing gloves move very slowly, and are made of metal, and when they clash, they explode. They look like nuclear warheads ( ogives nucléaires ) about to be launched ( qui vont être lancées ). It echoes ( cela fait écho à ) Reagan's speech: Americans should be ready for war, and the Nuclear Race must be resumed ( doit être reprise ). Then we watched the famous training montage. Here's a table with our impressions: ROCKY/USA                                                                                DRAGO/USSR Training in Nature                                                ...

Reading the Speech Today we tried and read the speech more carefully. We discovered that Reagan says the Russian people is unhappy under Communism, and that maybe one day, they will be friendly with Americans. But then (now in the past), the USSR is still evil. He also says that evil is created in nice offices by "quiet men in white collars" ( en col blanc ). He also declares that these quiet men are the Soviets, and that they are dangerous for the USA, because they pretend (to pretend= faire semblant ) they want peace, but they really want the destruction of America. Finally, he wants Americans to prepare for war, to show some courage, and to accept nuclear race. Evil Empire Speech Today we studied a famous speech by R.Reagan, delivered in 1981. The first paragraph is about a "young father" working in Hollywood, who said in a gathering that he preferred to see his daughters die than becoming Communists. Hollywood can be seen as a form of power: it helps spread ( propager ) American ideas and ideals and policies. Reagan, from Actor to President of the USA Today we had an oral comprehension activity. Here's what we learnt. Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became the President of the USA. He was elected twice, in 1980 and 1984. Before that, he had been the governor of California, in 1967. He was a Republican. During his two terms ( mandats ), he was a very popular president, with an economic boom. In 1988, he had a 68% approval rating ( côte de popularité ). In 1981, there was an assassination attempt ( tentative d'assassinat ) against him. He was also the oldest elected president before Donald Trump. homework Correction USA / USSR 1945 / 1989 (Fall of the Berlin Wall) -1990 (collapse of the USSR) CO mmunism threatened (menaced) devil-incarnate nuclear tension Homework for next time : try and find the meaning of the words from the sheet (la fiche)

Seats & Forms Of Power 1

Rocky, A Symbol Of Power Today we studied a picture. We could see parts of the American flag, hidden behind blue squares. At first glance ( au premier regard ), we thought it was about Donald Trump because he's the President of the USA. Then we noticed two men holding the flag ; there was a ring in the background. Eventually, we understood it was the poster of a movie called Rocky IV, with Sylvester Stallone. We wondered why it was connected with the notion "Seats & Forms of Power." In Rocky IV, Rocky is the symbol of the American power, and the movie showed the Americans in a good light.  the US flag is called Stars and Stripes. To hide, hid, hidden - cacher to notice - remarquer in the background - à l'arrière plan in the foreground - au premier plan we wondered why - on s'est demandé pourquoi
